More good news for the hemp industry and the fight against the Coronavirus arrived early this week when scientists showed how CBGA and CBDA could, at a molecular level, prevent COVID-19 infection. Two new studies, conducted by Oregon State University and the Journal of Nature Products say CBGA and CBDA prevent the virus from entering human cells. Richard van Breeman, a researcher with Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center led the study. He and his team say cannabinoid acids CBDa and CBGa bind with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. That blocks a critical step in the process that the virus uses to infect people. It’s also the same spike protein targeted by all the most effective vaccines. Add that to the long list of amazing properties that the hemp plant possesses.
Researchers at Oregon State found that both CBDA and CBGA were equally effective. In addition, both work against alpha and beta covid variants. It is important to note that “The researchers tested the compounds’ effect against alpha and beta variants of the virus in a laboratory. The study didn’t involve giving the supplements to people or comparing infection rates in those who use the compounds to those who don’t”, according to Bloomberg.com.
Both compounds show promise, but further research needs to be conducted. Van Breeman said, “Our data show CBDa and CBGa are effective against the two variants we looked at, and we hope that trend will extend to other existing and future variants.” Regardless, that news sounds great during a time when bad news seems to get worse. The U.S. is still weeks away from a peak in the number of new COVID-19 cases. Numbers of new cases are soaring due to the highly contagious omicron variant.
How do CBGA and CBDA Prevent Covid Infection?
The figure below helps to demonstrate how the process works:
The researchers say, “CBGA and CBDA prevented infection to human epithelial cells by a pseudovirus expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and prevented entry of live SARS-CoV-2 into cells.” Furthermore, they claim that both CBGA and CBDA have a, “long history of safe human use”. The compounds, “have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2”, according to the study. Again, we need to do more human studies on how CBGA and CBDA Prevent Covid Infection.
What is CBGA and CBDA?
CBGA, also known as Cannabigerolic Acid, was discovered by Israeli researchers over 50 years ago. CBDV, also know as Cannabidiolic Acid is a rare cannabinoid that was discovered by Raphael Mechoulam in 1965. Both CBGA and CBDA are non-intoxicating. CBGA, in particular, may yield restorative and preventative advantages with no major undesirable side effects. In addition, they do not give you the same high as THC. Rather, they are used in topical lotions as well as research for various diseases.
